Pathway 4

Building strength, confidence and technique

Pathway 4 is for children aged 3 years and above who are ready to build on their early independent swimming skills. At this stage, confidence is growing and lessons begin to focus more clearly on technique, distance and controlled movement in the water.

Lessons are led by a qualified swimming instructor in the water, ensuring each child continues to receive encouragement, reassurance and individual attention as skills develop.

Who are these lessons for?

This pathway is designed for:

  • Children who have successfully completed the Pathway 3 awards

  • Swimmers who are becoming confident and independent in the water

  • Children ready to develop skills in a structured, supportive environment

Lessons remain calm and positive, helping children progress while feeling safe and supported.

What do we focus on at this stage?

In Pathway 4, we focus on:

  • Improving swimming technique

  • Developing stamina and control in the water

  • Encouraging confidence over longer distances

  • Supporting consistent, steady progression

Children are always encouraged at their own pace, with reassurance and guidance throughout.

What badges do swimmers work towards?

Swimmers in Pathway 4 work towards:

  • STAnley 3, STAnley 4 and STAnley 5

  • Octopus 2 (skills award) and 10 metre distance award

  • Octopus 3 (skills award)

These awards recognise growing strength, improved technique and increasing confidence as swimmers continue their journey.
