What Goes Into a Great Swimming Lesson (That You Don’t Always See)

When parents think about swimming lessons, it’s easy to focus on what happens in the water — the skills being taught, the progress being made, and the smiles at the end of the session.

What often isn’t seen is everything that happens behind the scenes to make those lessons as good as they are.

At Sue’s Swim School, we believe that a great lesson starts with a well-supported, well-trained instructor. That’s where we invest a huge amount of our time and energy.

Not Just Qualifications — Ongoing Support

All of our class-leading teachers are fully qualified, but we don’t stop there.

A qualification is the starting point, not the finish line.

We recognise that every instructor is different. Some come to us newly qualified, others have years of experience, and some are at the very beginning of their journey working towards becoming a swimming teacher.

Our role is to support each of them properly, so they can deliver the best possible experience for your child.

Supporting New Instructors From Day One

We regularly take on staff who are not yet fully qualified as swimming teachers. These team members are never placed in a position where they are leading lessons before they are ready.

Instead, we:

  • Guide them towards the correct qualifications

  • Support them through the process step by step

  • Give them real, hands-on experience alongside experienced teachers

  • Help them build confidence before they take on more responsibility

This allows us to develop instructors the right way, rather than rushing people through.

Working Closely With STA Training

We make full use of the STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) training pathways, including:

  • Formal qualification courses

  • Online learning and seminars

  • Continued professional development opportunities

These are excellent resources, but like any course, they have time limits. There is only so much that can be covered in depth within a set programme.

That’s where we take things further.

Our Own Sue’s Swim School Training Platform

To make sure nothing is missed, we have developed our own Sue’s Swim School online learning platform.

This allows us to provide:

  • Additional training videos

  • Practical teaching breakdowns

  • Real lesson scenarios

  • Ongoing learning that instructors can access anytime

It means our team aren’t just relying on what they learned during a course — they are continuously developing.

One-to-One Coaching and Support

Alongside online learning, we spend a lot of time working directly with our instructors.

This includes:

  • One-to-one coaching

  • Poolside feedback

  • Mentoring from experienced teachers

  • Support in areas where individuals may need extra guidance

Andy, who is a qualified STA tutor and assessor, plays a key role in this. His experience allows us to go into detail and “fill the gaps” that standard courses simply don’t have time to cover.

Why This Matters for Your Child

All of this work has one clear aim:

To make sure every child in our lessons receives safe, structured, high-quality teaching.

When instructors feel confident, supported, and well-trained:

  • Lessons run more smoothly

  • Children feel more at ease

  • Progress becomes more consistent

  • Safety remains at the highest level

It also means our teachers are better equipped to adapt to each child — because no two swimmers are ever the same.

A Lot Happens Behind the Scenes

We understand that parents don’t always see this side of things, and that’s completely natural.

But it’s important to know that a lot of thought, time, and investment goes into making sure the person teaching your child is:

  • Qualified

  • Supported

  • Continuously improving

That is something we take very seriously.

Our Approach, In Simple Terms

We don’t rush instructors. We don’t cut corners. We don’t stop at the minimum.

We invest in our team so they can give your child the best possible experience in the water.

And that’s something we’ll continue to build on.
