Free Swimming Lessons in December: Giving Children a Safer Start in the Water

In December, we quietly ran a free swimming lesson campaign for children in our local community.

There was no big promotion and no expectation attached to it. We simply wanted to give children time in the water,

safely, calmly, and without cost getting in the way.

By the end of the month, we had provided over 100 hours of free swimming lessons across Sutton Coldfield, Kingstanding, Great Barr, and Lichfield.

Making Swimming More Accessible

As a family-run swim school, we speak to parents every week. We hear the same things again and again, families wanting to prioritise swimming, but juggling work, school, and finances.

For some parents, swimming lessons have to sit on a long list of “we’ll do it when we can”.

This campaign was about removing that pressure, even briefly, and opening pool doors to children who might not otherwise get the chance.

The lessons were:

  • Completely free

  • Focused on basic water safety and confidence

  • Delivered in a calm, supportive environment

  • Open to children who were new to swimming lessons

Working Alongside Local Schools

We were only able to run these free swimming lessons because of the support of several local schools who worked alongside us to make it happen.

By offering sessions within familiar school settings and at practical times, we were able to keep things simple for families. Children arrived feeling more at ease, and parents knew exactly where their child would be and who would be teaching them.

That sense of familiarity made a real difference.

What Parents Shared With Us

Some of the most meaningful feedback came quietly, often at the poolside or in a short message after the sessions finished.

Several parents told us that without these free swimming lessons, their child wouldn’t currently be able to attend at all. Others shared how grateful they were simply to see their child happy and relaxed in the water.

There was no expectation for families to continue afterwards. Many just wanted to say thank you.

Those moments stayed with us.

Small Steps Matter

Not every child left swimming independently, and that was never the goal.

What we did see were small but important steps:

  • Children feeling more comfortable in the water

  • Improved confidence around the pool

  • Parents feeling reassured that their child had started safely

Sometimes, that first experience is the most important one.

Why Water Safety Will Always Come First

Swimming lessons aren’t just about strokes and distances. They’re about helping children feel safe, capable, and supported around water.

This campaign was a reminder of why water safety sits at the heart of what we do, whether lessons are paid or free, ongoing or short-term.

Looking Ahead

We’re grateful to the schools who worked with us, the families who trusted us, and the children who took part across Sutton Coldfield, Kingstanding, Great Barr, and Lichfield.

December showed us that even a small window of opportunity can make a meaningful difference.

We’ll continue to look for ways to support families and promote safe, confident swimming whenever we can.
